Why EVERY Gender Needs to Learn About Feminism

word art feminism womenOver the past semester at Bentley , I took an “Introduction to Gender Issues” course. I know what you may be thinking – a gender studies course at a business school?!  Yes, business schools DO, in fact, offer gender studies courses (and great ones, if I may say so myself).

After taking this class, if there is one huge lesson I have learned, it is that business schools and the business world are in greater need of courses like this than any other institution or group. Why? Because business schools are overwhelmingly populated by male students and workplaces are dominated by men, as well. I’m sure you’ve heard it time and time again – women are a minority in the workplace.

Catalyst released statistics this month about female CEOs in Fortune 500 companies. Equality in the corporate world would look like 250 female CEOs, but unfortunately the Fortune 500 companies are far from that at only 18 female CEOs out of 500 (3.6%) and 35 female CEOs out of Fortune 1000 companies (3.5%).

Even at my smaller scale institution of Bentley University, I am in the minority in terms of gender, due to 60% of the undergraduate student population being made up of men. So, what does this mean? It does not mean that women should be given privileges in order to rise above men in business schools or in the workplace, but rather that women should be given privileges in order to be on an equal level with men. In my experiences as a feminist at a business school, I’m often asked the question (by both men and women), “Why should women get extra privileges than men? Shouldn’t everything just be based on merit and achievements?”.

My response is usually: “Yes, I do agree that everything should be based on such achievements, so therefore women need to be given resources and support in order to rank equally with men. Why, you ask? Because men are typically promoted based on potential, whereas women are promoted based on their performance. Women are forced to work harder and “prove themselves”, which is unequal in terms of work effort and opportunities.

This common misconception, by both men and women, in the business world clearly points to the fact that more education is needed on these issues, not just for women, but for all genders. Is education the only solution to such inequality? No. Is change in business schools and workplaces going to be rapid? Absolutely not. However, perhaps that by promoting gender equality on the lower level in schools and universities, some change for the future could be fostered and set in place. In my gender studies class, women were in the majority and there were only two male students…yes – two. Perhaps its not “cool” to be a “dude” in a gender studies class. More likely, however, it is a social sign of weakness for men to identify with feminism or gender equality at a business school – a greater chance that a stereotype will be assigned to them.

Women convening and speaking about changes for the better is fabulous – there is no doubt about the power of women’s minds in terms of gender equality reform. However, true effectiveness for change will come if more men participate in the movement and these discussions. It is not enough for men to simply take a follower’s approach – all genders need to be working together to promote feminism and gender equality or else true change will never occur. Business schools and workplaces need to lead by example and practice fair treatment and opportunity-giving to all workplaces. Institutions need to start presenting gender equality as everyone’s issue, not just women’s issues. Bentley University has amazing resources in terms of working towards gender equality – a Gender Studies minor option, a Women’s Center, a Graduate Women’s Leadership Organization, a Her Campus branch, an 85 Broads chapter, and the Center for Women and Business. These resources are a “dent” in the area of gender inequality in business and provide current women at Bentley with a broad, high-level range of knowledge and tool sets regarding their future in the business world.

However, in order for women at Bentley and women around the world to be successful, large institutional changes must occur. All genders must work together and business leaders must join to engage in discussions around issues and solutions. Until then, women will continue to work twice as hard, while they get paid less.

Oh, and did I mention that they are constantly reminded about their “plans” for when they have children? To be continued.

Eat Healthy at Fast Food Restaurants This Summer

Fast Food Chains

Summer break is a great opportunity for college students to get their healthy eating habits back on track and possibly lose their “Freshman Fifteen”! However, it is definitely likely that you will be going out to dinner or stopping by fast food restaurants more in the summer than you would during the school year.

Declining dinner invitations and watching hungrily as your friends chow down on McDonald’s no longer has to happen with these tools and tips for healthy eating at restaurants and fast food stops!

Warning: Sometimes the items on the menu that you think are the healthiest, such as Chicken Sandwiches or Salads, turn out to be the choices with the highest fat or calorie counts. Many fast food restaurants’ salads include full fat dressing, full fat cheese, and other add-ins that skyrocket the calorie and fat levels. Don’t be fooled by fake “healthy choices”!

Tips for Healthy Eating at Fast Food Chains & Restaurants

1. Look up nutritional information online before driving to the restaurant

Looking up the nutritional facts for the restaurant online before going to the restaurant gives you more time to make healthy choices and more information than the  misleading menu may have. When trying to eat healthy at restaurants, “Information is power!

2. Always get chicken or fish grilled, not crispy!

Fried chicken or fish contains much more fat and calories than grilled chicken. So next time you’re asked “Would you like that crispy or grilled?”, you know the answer!

3. Don’t be afraid to “Special Order”!

Especially if you are at a “sit-down” restaurant with a waitress, special ordering can save you stress and calories when it comes to healthy eating out. If the menu does not show an option for grilled chicken, you can often still ask for your chicken to be prepared in a way other than fried or crispy.

4. Free yourself from the fries!

Many fast food chains are catching on that people want healthier options as sides. Since eating healthy is all about making choices and moderation, choosing to have rice, veggies, or fruit in place of fries or onion rings can save you loads of calories and fat!

5. Water, water, water!

If you’re choosing a value meal that comes with a drink, adding sugary sodas is definitely not the way to go! Water is available everywhere and provides a great, healthy way for you to save even more calories, while still feeling full. Drinking water before, during, and after meals really helps you to make healthy choices and feel fuller longer.

Summer Essential: The Playlist

There’s nothing better than sunbathing with a glass of lemonade and a great playlist in the summertime. Whether you’re stuck in the morning commute to your internship or you’re bored of watching “The Price is Right” at home, the right playlist can always spice things up!

Buying songs on Amazon or iTunes is a great way to build your playlist and makes it easy to find any song from any genre! iTunes has several “Top Charts” lists, as well as FREE or discounted songs and albums. I love the 69 cent songs and free singles of the week!

Summer Essentials

Another great FREE way to make playlists is on Grooveshark.com with their easy search method and pre-made “Popular” playlist! Whenever I’m scrambling to put music on for friends or while hanging outside, I always turn to the default “Popular” playlist because it includes songs from different genres. With the variety, everyone will be sure to hear at least one song that they like!

While you can’t download the songs from Grooveshark, the site gives you a great way to decide what songs you like or to listen to songs from your laptop! If you’re at work or at your friends house, you can access all of your Grooveshark playlists by signing into your username. This way you will never be without your favorite Summer mix!

If you’re too busy (or too lazy) to make a playlist, but still want to rock out this summer, then PandoraAOL Radio, or other online radios are always a great option.  While you can’t search for specific songs that you’re craving at the moment, you can still find some pretty awesome new tracks or artists that sound like the ones you already love! I recently found Stereomood.com , which allows you to click on an emotion or mood to choose your radio station. Whether you feel (or want to feel) happy, sad, relaxed, or angry-they’ve got a station for you!

Here is my current summer playlist! I like to keep my playlists random because when I’m lying in the sun or driving to work I want to hear a variety so that I don’t get bored. Enjoy!

Check out my playlist on Grooveshark for more songs!

Creative Ways to Give Back with the Arts!

Participating in community service in the arts is not only rewarding to those that you are helping, but also to yourself.

Playing theater games, writing plays together, or singing songs from “Annie” can really bring you back and remind you of your childhood. Often, as children we have no inhibitions or outside influences on our creativity, which is why working the arts into children’s programming is important for learning how to be confident and unique.

Local Theater Companies, Art Galleries, or Music Schools

Many local theater companies include programs for children, many of which are free outreach programs in schools or after-school centers.

In Pittsfield, MA, Barrington Stage Company integrates learning about theater and building self-esteem through after-school programs. The KidsAct  program is held at community outreach centers, such as Girls, Inc., and allows children to talk about any issues or experiences in a fun way.

Programs for children are always looking for college students’ help because the children are constantly searching for positive role models to be around. Great places to look for community outreach programs in the Arts are at local theater companies, YMCAs, Boys & Girls Clubs, or at your local community center. Most local theater companies have “Education” or “In the Community” features on their website where you can find a description of their outreach programs.

Fundraisers for Local Schools’ Arts Programs

If playing theater games or helping kids write a play is not your thing, then a great alternative way to make a difference in the arts is to hold a charitable event to benefit the Arts programs in local schools. With many recent budget cuts in schools nationwide, often arts and music programs are the first to go.

Some ideas for fundraising events for arts programs are:

  • Screening or reading of a popular play or musical
  • Auction of student-made paintings or drawings
  • Benefit concert featuring alumni of the school’s arts program
  • Workshops put on in the community by art teachers or directors
Working with your local elementary, middle, or high schools are great places to start with planning a fundraiser!
Many national foundations are dedicated to this cause, as well, such as:

Bored with the Elliptical? Try Ballet!

Getting tired of your elliptical and daily running workout? Are crunches and push-ups starting to drive you crazy? Ballet is a great workout that is often overlooked because it is thought to be something that you have to start as a child or do for many years.

However, there are many ballet schools that offer Adult Programs for those that either have no prior ballet experience or have not danced since their younger years. Additionally, you are not required to wear only a leotard and tights, which is usually another area of concern for potential ballerinas. Many adults wear t-shirts, yoga pants, or leggings to ballet classes, as soft ballet slippers are the only required element.

The Benefits of Ballet

Better Balance and Posture
Because ballet uses your own body as weights and resistance, balance and posture definitely improve! Even after just one beginner class you may feel yourself sitting up a little straighter and being less clumsy on the walk around campus. While some of the class is done at the barre for warming up, the other half of the class is done in the center of the floor without any help for balance.

Whole-Body Workout
With all the different movements and steps that ballet involves, you are sure to target almost every muscle group during the class. You may not realize it while dancing, but the next day you will definitely feel that your entire body has had a great workout!

Fun & Easy Way to get an Intense Workout
Similar to Zumba or Kickboxing, ballet is a great way to pass the time of working out because you are having fun listening to the music and learning new steps. Ballet classes are a great alternative for those who get bored with exercise machines or running!

Challenges Your Mind
Since you are learning new steps and combinations of moves throughout the class, your mind is constantly challenged in remembering sequences of steps and the learning of musicality and rhythm. In addition, ballet involves many steps, combinations, and dances that are derived from French, Italian, and Russian languages, so you can even end up learning some new vocabulary words!

Details

Many local ballet schools have the option of adult classes for all levels and abilities. Some Google-searching or reading of  the local newspaper should help in finding locations and studios that offer the classes!

In the Boston area, the Boston Ballet School has adult classes in both the Boston, MA and Newton, MA studios, and even offers a college student discount! Because the classes are pay-as-you-go, they are very flexible with busy schedules or if you just want to try one or two classes to start out. Information for Adult Classes at Boston Ballet can be found by visiting  www.bostonballet.or/school/adult-programs.

Green Day on Broadway with “American Idiot”

When people think of “musicals” they often think of The Wizard of Oz, Chicago, and West Side Story. However, there are many contemporary musicals that aren’t the typical “Broadway” genre, including Shrek: The Musical and American Idiot. The “rock musical” or “musical tribute” was very popular with classic rock artists like Queen and Billy Joel, and it is becoming even more popular today!

One of the newest “rock musicals”, American Idiot, features popular hits from Green Day’sAmerican Idiot album and their 21st Century Breakdown album. The songs are put together to form a high-energy storyline about new-age Americans finding their voices in a post-9/11 world. One of the best features of the show is that Billie Joe Armstrong stars as “St. Jimmy” and does a phenomenal job of pumping up the audience!

The show has had wild success and continues to have sold-out performances to this day, as it opened almost a whole year ago on April 20, 2010. The Broadway show, featuring the Green Day frontman, will be closing soon on April 24, 2011.

The Broadway production of American Idiot won Tony Awards for “Best Scenery” and “Best Lighting”

Having won two Tony Awards for Best Scenic Design of a Musical and Best Lighting Design of a Musical,  the show is definitely a must-see!  The national tour will be starting in Fall 2011, so definitely keep your eyes open for that if you miss the Broadway production!

There are also plans for an American Idiot  movie, which will probably follow along the lines of other “musicals to movies”, such as Rent and Moulin Rouge. The film was recently confirmed on April 13, 2011, and will be directed by the same director of the Broadway show, Michael Mayer.

The sky is limit for American Idiot due to the raving reviews and high demand for tickets for the show! Who wouldn’t want to put on their black eyeliner and rock out with Green Day on Broadway?

More fortunate than you think?

Viewing this photo really made me question my complaints about my life. Am I more fortunate than I may think? Do the little problems of everyday life seem to become mountains out of molehills? We can all help others in many ways. Complaining seems irrelevant when thinking about world issues and the situations of others. It’s ironic that I saw this picture right after the earthquakes in Japan.. Love what you’ve been given and be thankful for your life.

Hello world!

Why am I here? Is there a purpose for me being here? I’m not really sure.

I do know that if one takes the mentality “I must be there or no one else will tell the story”, then they will feel more purpose in life.

Writing stories about experiences in life does not happen to brag, to boast, or to make others feel worse. Writing stories happens because people feel heightened and provoked by an experience, so as to want to enlighten and inspire others.

I am starting this blog to share my thoughts with others, while, in turn, finding myself and clarifying my experiences and dreams.
